References to other resolutions
The resolutions of the States General occasionally refer to other resolutions. This is done by means of the date (“hare Ho:Mo: resolutie vanden eersten deeser loopende maand”; “The States General’s resolution of the first of the current month“). In this dataset, the dates of resolution references have been collected and provided with a calendar date.
The text of the resolutions also contains dates that are not part of a reference to another resolution; these dates are not included in this dataset. Dates that could not be traced back to a specific date are also not included in this dataset.
Many dates are given as relative dates to the current session day (“xven der gepasseerde maand”, “7e deses”; Fifteenth (in roman numerals) of the previous month, seventh of this month) or to a previously mentioned date (“13e. daeraen volgende”, “vierden September bevorens”; Thirteenth thereafter next, fourteenth September previous). In the second case, we take the latter date within the same resolution as the reference date (that reference date can also be a date that is not part of a resolution reference).
Although the old (Julian) calendar remained in use for a long time in some provinces of the Dutch Republic, the States General have consistently used the ‘new style’ from the beginning. Only a few dates in the ‘stilo loci’ (old style) have been converted to the Gregorian calendar.
